Declaration by Tobias Pflüger on a SPD/Green armament initiative on Anti-War-Day

Election Posters in Berlin these days are decorated with the cynical tag: Vote for the All-party Coalition! Tobias Pflüger's (MEP) declaration is one of the many proofs that it exists (with one notable exception, of course):

A hyper-grand coalition consisting of Greens and social democrats and reaching all the way to conservatives and nationalists, on Tuesday in the Foreign Relations Committee has approved the statement by Angelika Beer in favour of subsidising the European armament industry. This declaration by Frau Beer is a supplement to a report by Joachim Würmeling (CSU) in the responsible Committee for the domestic market and consumer protection. From the rows of the social democrats, there came proposals on how to bring about a better “networking with the weapon's acquisition markets of the European Union, with the procurement markets of the USA, but also with those of the countries like the Ukraine”.

From the conservative side, there was also demanded a market opening for “dual use” goods. As referee for the position “on the Green Book concerning the acquisition of defence goods”, Angelika Beer organised a consensus, all the way from the Greens ranging to the nationalists, with the exception of the Left Party (GUE/NGL), on the subsidisation of the so-called European “defence goods” markets. Angelika Beer of course also wants, as she declares herself, to bring on its way the promotion of the armament industry in order to arm up the EU intervention troops and the EU battle groups.

60 years after the end of the Second World War, which was begun on September 1, 1939 by Germany with the attack on Poland, the demand for unlimited rearmament, also in the EU, and the use of war as means of politics, again seems to belong to daily political life.

I demand that the militarisation of the European Union, as it is also driven forward by the EU Constitutional Treaty and the armament obligation contained in it, be ended and that, in the future, our stakes be put on peaceful alternatives. Therefore, I shall, together with others, strive for the realisation of the following demands:

- That the EU should decisively resist the war plans by the USA against Iran and not drive forward their sleazy escalation strategy in the negotiations with Iran,
- That the USA withdraw its nuclear weapons from Europe and the British and French nuclear weapons be eliminated and that Germany renounce to uranium enrichment in Garching,
- That European intervention forces, the EU Battle Groups as well as the Rapid Intervention Group of NATO be dismantled,
- That the NATO strategy of 1999 be retracted and the Berlin plus agreement that allows the EU the drawing on NATO capacities be rescinded,
- That the EU and its member's states no longer take part in military interventions all over the world and fetch back their soldiers from all such deployments.
