Highlighting media reports of US plans to produce new nuclear warheads, German member of the European Parliament (MEP) Tobias Pflueger, speaking in the parliament Tuesday, criticized the hypocrisy surrounding the West's condemnation of Iran's nuclear program and spoke out against all nuclear
proliferation.
"In the EU, British Prime Minister Tony Blair wants to spend 30 billion euros on modernization of Britain's nuclear capabilities.
Such atomic production endangers the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the German Council Presidency must adopt a critical stance," he said.
The MEP, who belongs to the GUE/NGL (European United Left/Nordic Green Left), said his party supports protests against the UK's military program.
Meanwhile, noted Pflueger, the US plans to build a rocket defence program in the Czech Republic, Poland and in the Caucasus.
"According to NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, NATO wants to take part with its own rocket defence system. And the German Defence Minister Franz-Josef Jung wants to have the missile defence system under the umbrella of NATO. The Council and Commission must decisively censure these rocket defence plans" Pflueger said.
In his intervention during the debate on the European Council and Commission statements on non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament, the European lawmaker drew attention to the claims of former NATO chief commander Wesley Clark that a war is being prepared against Iran with the possible use of nuclear weapons.
"The Non-Proliferation Treaty means that all nuclear weapons must be disarmed. There are no good nuclear weapons; disarmament is the order of the day!" he said.
The European United Left/Nordic Green Left Group is made up of 41 MEPs from 16 parties in 13 European countries.
