EULEX asserts a EU protectorate Kosovo
Debate on Kosovo in the European Parliament on 04th February 2009 in Strasbourg
My parliamentary group GUE/NGL rejects the presented resolution on Kosovo.
Most EU member states - but not all - recognised the independence of Kosovo against international law. The left group insists that every solution for Kosovo has to be consistent with international law and has to be found with consent of all concerned states, therefore including Serbia.
The recognition of Kosovo established a fatal precedent. Meanwhile others are copying this - see South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
The EU started the mission EULEX in Kosovo. The left group disapproves this mission for it is based upon the recognition of Kosovo - violating international law - and for it is creating a kind of EU protectorate.
EULEX has executive powers in some domains. So EULEX officials can simply annul decisions by Kosovar authorities.
Within the framework of EULEX there are 500 policemen for counterinsurgency. On 26th of January EULEX and KFOR carried out a common exercise on counterinsurgency. This example shows the regrettably very close cooperation between EU and NATO in Kosovo as well.
Among others the EU is pushing the neoliberal restructuring of the economy in Kosovo. That is not in the interest of the people there.
Only a solution in accordance with international law and a clear vote against this EU-Mission EULEX!
If the people in Kosovo should get helped it will not be possible with the EULEX mission.
